Amina Benbouchta: A Visionary in Contemporary Moroccan Art
Amina Benbouchta exhibited with OH Gallery in 2023

Amina Benbouchta, born in Casablanca in 1963, divides her time between Paris and Casablanca. With degrees in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies from McGill University, Montreal, and training in various artistic disciplines in Paris, she has developed a multidisciplinary practice that spans painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and video. Her work reflects a deeply anthropological exploration, investigating the relationship between the human figure, everyday objects, and the environment, while evoking a "poetry of chance" that arises from their interactions.

Benbouchta emphasizes that her work is not confined to questions of origin or identity but instead engages with broader, universal concerns about the future of humanity. Through her art, she invents a symbolic language that emerges from both personal reflections and socio-cultural issues, making visible what often escapes perception. Her creations are not distinct series but rather form a continuous, evolving body of work, with each new piece contributing to the whole.
Her work carries a subtle yet potent political charge, questioning how contemporary women navigate both public and private spaces within a predominantly male-dominated society. Through poetic and metaphorical imagery, she challenges the structures of society, exploring the complexities of living as a modern woman in today's world.
